Typhoon Vinta made landfall in the southern Philippines at Mindanao on December 21st of last year, causing flooding and mudslides that forced more than 310,000 residents from their homes and claimed 266 lives.

In response, GlobalGivers like you stepped forward to support the people of the Philippines in their time of need, funding our vetted nonprofit partners on the ground. Your donation has supported the following recovery efforts:

  • Asset-Based Community Development with Equity Foundation (ABCDE Foundation) is providing vegetable gardening kits, organic fertilizer, and low-cost toilets to 750 storm survivors in Zamboanga del Norte and targeted coastal communities. They are also supplying 15 rainwater harvesters to community centers where water is scarce due to infrastructure that was destroyed by the typhoon.
  • Water, Agroforestry, Nutrition and Development Foundation (WAND) is distributing emergency food packs, vegetable seeds, and home and latrine repair kits to 3,000 storm-affected families in Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur and on the Zamboanga Peninsula.
  • Asia American Initiative provided shelter and post-trauma support to typhoon survivors, as well as distributing medical, hygiene, and school supplies in Zamboanga and Sulu Province.
  • IsraAID dispatched its team of mental health professionals to provide psychosocial and mental health support to local first responders. The organization's water engineers also provided water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions to storm-affected communities.

We're now closing the Philippines Typhoon Relief Fund, and this will be the final update you'll receive about relief efforts. I'd like to thank you again for your generosity in supporting community-led recovery efforts in the Philippines, and for making the smart choice to donate cash to support vetted nonprofits after Typhoon Vinta.

Warmly,
Britt Lake + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
