Nursery Development and Seedling Preparation for Forest Conservation

By Misbachul Munir | Project Staff

Dear Donors and Supporters,

We are thrilled to bring you a significant update on our mission to restore Indonesia’s forests. Thanks to your unwavering support, we hit a major milestone in December 2025: the successful establishment of our Small-Scale Plant Nursery.

This nursery is more than just a place to grow trees; it is the "engine room" of our conservation efforts. By producing our own high-quality seedlings, we have drastically reduced costs and ensured a steady supply of healthy trees for reforestation, making our project more sustainable and scalable for years to come.

The Strategy: Conservation Meets Community Livelihood

We believe that for a forest to thrive, the people living near it must thrive too. Our nursery focuses on a "Dual-Impact" selection of species. We aren't just planting for the canopy; we are planting for water, wildlife, and the local economy.

Our Current Seedling Portfolio includes:

  • For Conservation & Livelihood: * Liberica Coffee (Coffea liberica): Planted under the forest canopy, allowing farmers to earn an income without cutting down trees.

    • Durian (Durio zibethinus): Providing both forest cover and high-value fruit for local communities.

  • For Water & Carbon Sequestration:

    • Banyan (Ficus sp.) & Rain Tree (Samanea saman): The "water guardians" of the forest, known for their massive carbon absorption capacity.

    • Kayu Wadang & Randu Alas: Essential species for restoring the forest canopy and preserving local biodiversity.

  • For Wildlife Support:

    • We are also growing Guava, Rambutan, and Bananas to serve as natural food sources, ensuring that local wildlife stays within protected areas and thrives.

The Impact of Your Contribution

The establishment of this nursery directly impacts the community by:

  1. Lowering Costs: More of your donation now goes directly into the ground rather than purchasing expensive external seedlings.

  2. Community Empowerment: Local residents are trained in nursery management, giving them a direct stake in the forest's success.

  3. Scalability: We are now better equipped to reach our goal of planting 100,000 trees across East and Central Java.

What’s Next?

The nursery is now a long-term asset for the region. In the coming months, we will focus on:

  • Expansion of Distribution: Moving seedlings from the nursery to designated restoration sites.

  • Capacity Building: Training more community members in tree monitoring and forest protection.

  • Monitoring: Utilizing technology to track the survival rate and carbon sequestration of our newly planted trees.

Thank you for being the roots of this project. Your support is helping us protect Indonesia’s forests and strengthen the communities that call them home.

With gratitude,
