Coffee for Conservation: Growing Forests and Livelihoods

By Misbachul Munir | Project Staff

We are excited to share that Yayasan INFEST, in partnership with Nusantara Organik, is currently preparing 10,000 coffee seedlings to support sustainable agroforestry initiatives in Blora and Ngawi. These regions, at lower altitudes, are ideal for the specific varieties we have selected: Liberica and Robusta.

Why Liberica? The Conservation Superhero

A key highlight of this phase is our focus on the Liberica variety. Unlike many other coffee types, Liberica is exceptionally resilient and adaptable, thriving everywhere from sea level up to high altitudes.

More importantly, Liberica is a vital tool for conservation:

  • Erosion Control: Its deep, robust root system helps stabilize soil, preventing erosion in hilly areas.
  • Agroforestry Integration: It grows harmoniously under the canopy of larger forest trees, allowing us to restore the forest while providing a sustainable income source for local farmers.

The Strategy: Agroforestry and Wild Zones

Our approach in Blora and Ngawi follows a dual-track conservation model:

  1. Community Agroforestry: Integrating coffee into community-managed lands. This ensures that the forest remains standing because it provides tangible economic value to the local people.
  2. Dedicated Conservation Zones: Beyond agroforestry, we are establishing Special Protected Zones. These areas are strictly reserved for water catchment and wildlife habitats, ensuring that local ecosystems and water cycles remain undisturbed.

Timeline & Impact

The 10,000 seedlings are currently being nurtured in our nursery and are scheduled for distribution in March 2026. These will be managed by a dedicated local community group, ensuring that the project is rooted in local ownership and long-term care.

Next Steps: What Your Support is Enabling

Your contributions continue to fuel our progress. Our upcoming milestones include:

  • Seedling Distribution (March 2026): Moving the 10,000 plants from the nursery to their permanent homes in Blora and Ngawi.
  • Technical Training: Providing workshops for the local community group on sustainable planting techniques and organic maintenance.
  • Site Preparation: Finalizing the zoning for the water and wildlife conservation areas.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. You are not just planting trees; you are helping us build a model where people and nature can thrive together.
