Indonesia is facing an escalating forest crisis. In 2024 alone, more than 261,000 hectares of forest were lost, and over the last decade, 4.5 million hectares of primary rainforest—around 11% of Indonesia’s most critical ecosystems—have disappeared. This rapid deforestation has intensified floods, landslides, droughts, and water scarcity, placing rural communities living near forests on the frontlines of climate and environmental impacts.
This project takes place in villages surrounding forest areas in Blora and Ngawi Regencies, where communities depend directly on forest ecosystems for water, food security, and livelihoods. These communities are often the first to suffer from forest degradation, yet they are also the most capable of protecting and restoring forests when given the opportunity and support.
Our approach is community-led and participatory, ensuring local people are central actors in forest restoration. The project combines agroforestry systems, which provide sustainable income through productive trees, with dedicated conservation forest zones aimed at protecting biodiversity, water sources, and ecological balance. Women’s participation is a key priority, recognizing their essential role in natural resource management and community resilience.
Stand With Communities on the Forest Frontlines.
