Nursery Progress Update

By Misbachul Munir | Project Staff

Dear Supporters and Partners,

As we move forward into early 2026, we are excited to share our latest field updates from our nurseries and conservation sites. We are currently preparing a diverse range of seeds specifically selected to support agroforestry initiatives in Blora, Central Java, and Ngawi, East Java.

Our strategy is twofold: enhancing the ecological health of the region while simultaneously strengthening the local economy through sustainable cultivation.

1. Nursery Preparation: Strengthening the Roots

We are currently nurturing three key species, each chosen for its unique environmental and economic contribution:

  • Liberica Coffee (Coffea liberica): Unlike other varieties, Liberica is known for its deep and robust root system. This makes it an ideal candidate for soil conservation in areas with extreme slopes, preventing erosion while providing a high-value harvest.

  • Candlenut (Aleurites moluccanus): Locally known as Kemiri, this tree acts as a natural water retainer. Its dense canopy provides essential shade (the "umbrella" effect) for the forest floor, and its nuts offer a steady source of income for community members.

  • Red Silk Cotton Tree (Bombax ceiba): Known as Randu Alas, this majestic tree is a powerhouse for water conservation. Capable of living for hundreds of years, it provides vital shade and serves as a long-term guardian of the local ecosystem.

2. On-the-Ground Land Preparation

Simultaneous with our nursery work, we are mobilizing local communities to prepare the conservation lands. This phase is critical for the survival of the new saplings and includes:

  • Invasive Species Management: Our teams are clearing invasive plants that compete with native vegetation and hinder conservation efforts.

  • Erosion Control: In areas with steep gradients and minimal tree cover, we are constructing terraces and planting specialized grasses to stabilize the soil and prevent landslides before the main planting season begins.

Your continued support allows us to merge scientific land management with community-led action. We are not just planting trees; we are building a resilient landscape that will protect and provide for generations to come.
