In Blora, Central Java, trees are not only part of the landscape—they are part of survival. For rural families living near forest areas, land productivity determines whether children stay in school, whether households can withstand climate shocks, and whether migration becomes the only option. When forests are degraded, livelihoods weaken. But when trees return, opportunity grows.
Through collaboration between Yayasan INFEST and the local community members, forest restoration is being transformed into an engine of local economic empowerment. Communities are supported to adopt coffee-based agroforestry systems, integrating timber trees, fruit crops, conservation plants, and livestock within the same land management model. This diversified approach improves soil fertility, strengthens water retention, and increases long-term income stability.
Instead of relying on single-crop systems that are vulnerable to price shocks and climate variability, farmers build layered production systems that generate multiple revenue streams. Timber offers long-term value, fruit trees provide seasonal income, coffee ensures market access, and improved ecological conditions sustain productivity over time. Trees become assets—economic, ecological, and social.
Participatory village planning further ensures that restoration efforts are embedded within local governance structures. By mapping village authority, welfare conditions, and local assets, communities design policies that align conservation goals with economic development strategies. This strengthens not only the land, but also institutional resilience.
Where trees become livelihoods, restoration is no longer an environmental project alone—it is a pathway toward dignity, resilience, and sustainable rural prosperity.
