Organic Fertilizer to Support Sustainable Agriculture and Agroforestry

By munir | Project Staff

Sustainable forest management does not stop at planting trees—it requires restoring soil health and strengthening ecological cycles. In forest-adjacent villages in Blora, sustainable agriculture and agroforestry systems depend heavily on improving soil fertility without increasing reliance on chemical inputs that degrade long-term land productivity.

To address this, Yayasan INFEST supports the development of community-based organic fertilizer initiatives, closely linked with local sheep farming groups. Livestock waste is processed into compost and organic inputs that enrich soil structure, increase microbial activity, and improve water retention capacity. This circular system reduces production costs for farmers while strengthening the environmental sustainability of agroforestry landscapes.

Organic fertilizer plays a critical role in coffee-based agroforestry systems, where crops are cultivated alongside timber trees, fruit species, and native forest plants. By restoring soil nutrients naturally, farmers can maintain productivity, enhance crop resilience to climate variability, and protect surrounding forest ecosystems from chemical runoff.

Beyond its ecological benefits, the organic fertilizer initiative also creates economic value. It opens opportunities for small-scale local production, reduces dependence on external agricultural inputs, and reinforces integrated farming systems where livestock, crops, and trees support one another.

Through this approach, agriculture becomes regenerative rather than extractive. Soil health improves, tree growth strengthens, and farmers gain greater control over sustainable production practices—ensuring that agroforestry systems remain productive, resilient, and environmentally responsible for the long term.
