Developing Liberica Coffee Agroforestry to Support Conservation

By munir | Project Staff

In forest-adjacent villages in Blora and surrounding areas, the development of Liberica coffee agroforestry has become a strategic approach to align conservation goals with rural economic empowerment. Liberica coffee is selected for its strong adaptability to marginal land conditions, tolerance to shade, and resilience to climate variability compared to some other coffee varieties.

Within this system, Liberica coffee is cultivated under protective shade trees and forestry species (Multi-Purpose Tree Species / MPTS), forming a productive agrisilviculture model that maintains tree cover while generating income. The multi-layered planting structure mimics natural forest ecosystems, helping to:

  • Improve soil fertility

  • Maintain soil moisture and water absorption capacity

  • Reduce erosion

  • Sequester carbon and enhance climate resilience

Economically, Liberica coffee has growing market potential, particularly within specialty coffee segments known for its distinctive flavor profile. In addition to coffee yields, fruit and timber trees integrated into the agroforestry system provide medium- and long-term income streams. This diversified approach enables farmers to increase household income without expanding agricultural land into forest areas.

Importantly, conservation efforts extend beyond agroforestry production zones. As part of a sustainable landscape planning strategy, dedicated conservation areas are established separately from productive agroforestry land. These zones focus entirely on biodiversity protection, watershed conservation, and natural forest regeneration. Clear spatial planning between production and conservation areas ensures long-term ecological balance.

Liberica coffee agroforestry serves as a bridge between livelihood security and forest protection. It empowers forest-adjacent communities to become active stewards of restoration—creating economic value while safeguarding critical ecosystem functions.
