As part of its ongoing effort to restore degraded forest landscapes and strengthen community-based conservation, Yayasan INFEST is currently preparing 10,000 new Robusta coffee seedlings for distribution to forest farmers in Blora Regency, Central Java.
The initiative forms part of a broader agroforestry development strategy that seeks to combine ecological restoration with sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities living in and around forest areas. By integrating economically valuable crops with local tree species, the program aims to create productive landscapes that support both conservation and rural development.
Supporting Forest Restoration Through Agroforestry
The Robusta coffee seedlings will be planted within agroforestry systems alongside locally adapted timber and conservation tree species. These planting activities will focus on degraded and critical forest areas that have experienced declining ecological functions due to years of unsustainable land use and limited vegetation diversity.
The agroforestry approach offers multiple benefits. In addition to restoring tree cover, it provides farmers with future sources of income through coffee production while strengthening ecosystem services such as soil protection, water retention, and biodiversity conservation.
Rather than relying on monoculture cultivation, the project promotes diversified landscapes where conservation and economic productivity can coexist within the same area.
Nursery Preparation During the Dry Season
Seedling preparation is currently being carried out during the dry season to ensure that the plants are ready for field distribution once favorable planting conditions arrive.
The nursery phase is a critical component of the restoration process. During this period, seedlings are carefully managed to ensure healthy root development and strong growth before transplantation. By preparing seedlings months in advance, the project can maximize planting readiness and improve survival rates once the rainy season begins.
This approach reflects the project's commitment to climate-adaptive restoration planning, particularly in light of increasing weather variability and prolonged dry periods affecting many parts of Indonesia.
Planting Schedule for the 2026 Rainy Season
The 10,000 Robusta coffee seedlings are expected to be distributed and planted beginning in December 2026, when rainfall is projected to reach optimal levels across the target areas in Blora.
Planting during the peak rainy season significantly increases seedling survival rates by ensuring sufficient soil moisture during the critical establishment period. The timing also allows farmers to integrate coffee planting with broader conservation and agroforestry activities planned for the 2026–2027 restoration season.
Looking Ahead
The preparation of 10,000 Robusta coffee seedlings represents an important step toward building more resilient forest landscapes in Central Java. Through agroforestry, local communities can restore degraded lands while creating sustainable economic opportunities that reduce pressure on surrounding forests.
By combining coffee cultivation with local tree species, the initiative supports a long-term vision of conservation that benefits both people and nature. As the seedlings continue to grow in the nursery, they represent more than future coffee harvests—they represent a pathway toward healthier forests, stronger communities, and more sustainable rural livelihoods.
