Dear Friends,

Every few months, we update you on our reforestation project in rural Senegal and thank you for your support. While none of our work would be possible without your help, we are also indebted to the Government of Senegal and our partner communities in the region who work with us in making reforestation in Senegal a story of success. So today, in this update, I want to give a “shout out” to some of those individuals and organizations who are working with us towards the common goal of a green Senegal.

Each year, during the first Sunday of August, Senegal holds their National Tree Day (Journée Nationale de l’Arbre) ceremony which marks the beginning of their annual reforestation campaign. This year (2023) was the 40th edition of this campaign. During the ceremony this year in the Kaolack region of Senegal where CREATE! is headquartered, we were honored to receive the official delegation headed by the Governor of the region, accompanied by all administrative authorities of Guinguineo department, as well as departmental and regional chiefs and local authorities in Walo Sendiegne, to officially launch the reforestation campaign of 2023.

CREATE!’s co-Executive Director, Omar Seck, also had the opportunity to present our organizations work on reforestation during the ceremony and highlight the importance of trees in the region. Seck and our team in Senegal then accompanied the Government officials in a tour around some of the communities in the region where the officials planted trees themselves to mark the occasion. Our team also welcomed the officials to CREATE!’s community garden site in Walo. This site, due to its abundance of clean water, has been a chosen site for a tree nursery of the Senegal Government’s Water and Forestry Department for a few years now. The officials not only visited the site, but also recognized Arame, the President of Walo’s Women’s Group for her leadership quality with a diploma. This recongnition is empowering for Arame and the whole community.

Arame, all the women of the communities and the government officials who are supporting their efforts deserve all our thanks today and every day for working on this very important venture. And we thank you all for believing in their hard work and funding it. I hope you will consider sharing about this venture with other like-minded people and will keep funding this project.

Thank You!
