Waiting for exam results is not easy.......unless you get selected to go to secondary school then you are finished.........life is difficult for students with the competition so great! . But its now Holiday time from school...though holiday time is not really a Holiday!..This time of the year is "work" time ! especially this year after the devastation of cyclone Freddie which raged across malawi in late march. Homes now have to be rebuilt after being demolished, and this is House building time anyway when the grasses have grown high enough to make Thatch for the roofs. Both adults and children..the young and the old can be seen coming down the mountain track carrying huge bundles of grass on their heads. In all the surrounding villages bricks are being moulded and then burnt to be ready for building. Our children play a big part in this annual enterprize.
There is some respite for the children who live near to the Library as they can play chess or read books or listen to stories by the librarian. Some walk great distances for this pleasure. Those of an age are also involved in initiation ceremonies at tjhis time of year. At the end of August there is the Likulezi Olympics ( a sports day for children) held in the field below the Library with Races, Sack races, High jump, Long jump and culumnating with a football match featuring the Likulezi Eagles. What of the prizes?....copies, pens and pencils in readiness for the new school year !
