Back to school !!
Although families continue to struggle with a poor harvest and escalating prices…both for food and school costs …at least during the summer months the Library / community centre was in full use by our Orphans and others in the community.
Our Library activities were as follows :
1. Providing school curriculum books and novels
2 .Weekly newspapers for the older students
3 .Listening circle for children
4. Chess club for students etc.
5. Quiz sessions for students
6. Annual sports day for children ( the Likuezi Olympics )…held in September..
This library it has now evolved into 1 main library and 2 outlying libraries with many other activities to benefit the community….and so can rightly be called a Community Centre!
Although the hunger situation was not much better, life went on for Likulezi... Our Orphans and vulnerable children are back to school and excited to have the chance to attend secondary school . It is unfortunate that those who managed to qualify for 3rd level colleges ( apart from Technical college) cannot be assisted by Likulezi due to the costs inherent in accommodation, food, clothing and college supplies eg.. laptops apart from fees. These costs are impossible for us to meet and its very sad that Malawi is missing out on future Leaders since they are not supported by government. It is also unfortunate that secondary school fees have escalated so much that many parents will not be able to send their children to secondary school and so it is feared that the schools will be half empty. Our Orphan children and vulnerable children will hopefully be able to continue though we will be inundated with other poor families struggling with the fees. We feel so glad to have our library as those who can’t attend school can at least have access to books.
Funding received was used as follows.
- School feees were paid for secondary schooling orphans.
- Uniforms were provided for both primary and secondary school going children.
- Accommodation costs food and school materials provided for those at boarding school and 1 orphan at medical school.
