Facing Reality !

Family with Orphans
Family with Orphans

Its become almost normal now to expect little, but to be grateful for whatever comes! the Harvest was sporadic...even within a 50 klm radius there were great differencers which is amazing ...but the soil differs greatly from one of our groups areas to another. take chilaeni group area...lots of swampy soil and good for rice growing.....but go 30 klms to naminga and you get Sand...where even a Borehole cant get through the granite! and so this means that the harvests greatly differ...some are lucky one year and others devastated..

But life goes on nevertheless...albeit a harsh life...still full of hope and laughter ...such as would put a rich country to shame. Our Orphans continued their schooling  and we were both  delighted and disappointed in that we had 2 orphans selected for 3rd level agricultural college but couldnt manage to send them due to financial difficulties. We had to make  the difficult decision that we can only fund secondary school attendance and not 3rd level. Because of the endemic poverty in our community the cost of sending even 1 child to 3rd level in future is beyond the scope of our finances....simply because its not the fees which constrain us but rather the cost of transport, accommodation, food, books, laptop and clothes!! We know how costly this is since we have one at medical school and it has stretched us to the point where we came to realise that it is beyond us in future.

Now in July....although on school holidays..there is no such thing as Holidays in these parts! . At this time of the year the communityy are busy with house building/repairs and initiation ceremonies. The library is open all the time so those who want to keep up studies or come to play chess or join quizes are welcome for a reprieve from community work..thats a sort of Holiday!!
