1. Background and Rationale
The city of Goma, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing major environmental challenges worsened by climate change. Rapid deforestation, violent winds, and heavy rainfall cause flooding, soil erosion, and serious damage to roads and homes. The lack of vegetation, combined with the city’s volcanic soil and poor drainage systems, exposes thousands of vulnerable families to growing health and economic risks.
In response to this situation, there is an urgent need for sustainable action to protect the environment and improve living conditions for local communities.
2. Overall Project Objective
To contribute to the fight against climate change in Goma by strengthening the city’s environmental resilience through tree planting and the restoration of green spaces.
3. Specific Objectives
4. Project Activities
The project will focus on planting trees adapted to local climate conditions, using organic compost produced from community waste. This ecological approach promotes local resource use while improving soil fertility.
Implementation will be carried out with the support of local youth and community volunteers who will be trained to ensure proper tree maintenance and survival. The project is currently in the phase of identifying trainers and trainees in preparation for full implementation.
5. Target Area and Beneficiaries
6. Implementation Timeline
The project is scheduled to begin in November 2025, following completion of preparatory activities and resource mobilization.
7. Project Budget
8. Partnership and Credibility
Our partnership with GlobalGiving provides strong assurance of transparency, accountability, and international visibility. This collaboration enhances our capacity to mobilize donors and to manage funds responsibly, ensuring that resources are used effectively to achieve meaningful results.
9. Expected Results and Impact
In the long term, reforestation will help stabilize Goma’s environment, reduce disaster risks, and improve public health. Greener spaces will lead to cleaner air, lower temperatures, and safer roads. Youth will gain practical environmental education, fostering long-lasting awareness and community ownership.
10. Call to Donors
We make a sincere appeal to all donors, partners, and supporters: your contribution can make a real difference in Goma. Every donation helps plant trees, protect families, and build a more resilient city in the face of climate change.
11. Acknowledgements
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all individuals and organizations who have shown interest in this project. Your trust and support are deeply appreciated. Together, with the support of GlobalGiving and our future donors, we are confident that this goal will be reached and that Goma will move toward a greener and safer future.
