Thank you for supporting our work to plant orchards in England, which will be our newest project and our first-ever trees planted on the British Isles!
This is important work, for the classic British orchard is not only a bountiful source of fresh food, biodiversity and opportunities for climate and outdoor education--but also a cultural and social touchstone that creates healthy, connected communities.
As part of her Master's dissertation this summer, FTPF's Development Manager Lizzy Rainey conducted research on community orchards in the UK, finding that these spaces are valuable sources of social capital, human connection and community purpose. The study also demonstrated that community orchards may differ from other shared outdoor spaces, such as community gardens, allotments or parks, as they are based more on altruism, sharing, and community purpose. In other words, communal effort and reward are at the very heart of the community orchard, making them uniquely impactful and important social spaces.
FTPF is excited to build upon this research and plant more orchards for British communities this winter. Stay tuned as we moved forward with these projects and, in the meantime, please consider donating or sharing this work with your friends and family!
