Hi friends,
Spring is upon us (even if the weather doesn't always cooperate) and the fruit trees are in bloom!
There is a lot to do this time of year in the orchard so that our trees are taken care of and ready for the season ahead.
Spring is a great time to apply dormant oil sprays (see our recommended recipe here) to protect against pests and diseases. It's also a good time to mulch and add organic material like compost to provide nutrients and protection as the weather warms up. It is also important to facilitate proper pollination in spring, so consider adding pollinator-friendly plants and ensure you have the right cross-pollinating trees in your orchard or nearby.
Events are happening around the country in community orchards this time of year, too. Orchard Blossom Day in particular is a great way to engage with your local orchard and see the blossoming trees in all their glory!
Here at FTPF, we are looking to plant and support new community orchards in the UK in the coming year. If you have an idea for a project or orchard location, please fill out an application on our website.
To a beautiful spring,
The FTPF Team
