Summary

For the past 2 years because of a lack of consistent rainfall, there has been significant crop failures in the remote area of Karamoja, in NE Uganda. The families living there are the poorest of the poor in Uganda. Today they are experiencing life threatening famine. Local authorities have estimated that close to 800 have died so far. Serve Uganda has responded quickly with funds for life saving food. We are expecting another need for food early in 2023.

Challenge

There are 50,000 people living in the villages where Serve Uganda is working in NE Uganda. It is estimated 800 have died in the last 2 months due to famine after two years of crop failures because of a lack of consistent rainfall.

Solution

This project is an emergency response to save lives. It is a stop/gap solution until the Ugandan government can step in with a longer-term solution.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact is that we can save lives now. Longer term help is needed to solve the problem of crop failures. Our farm equipment project is aimed at helping with that need.
