In March this year (2024), Tropical Storm Filipo caused severe damage to a Community Preschool where 70 local three to five year-olds enjoy "learn through play" lessons every day. The storm caused damage to the two classrooms, the store room and the playground. The school depends on support from the nearby Bahia Mar Resort and its guests. With $20,000 from friends, we can urgently make lasting repairs to return this preschool a safe and comfortable place for the little ones to thrive.
Heavy winds and rain from Filipo broke the timber that supports shade above the playground and damaged playground equipment, classrooms, the storage building and the front gate. Although the school remains open, the children lack safe spaces to learn and play.
Our hope is to repair all of the broken infrastructure at the school including fixing the swings, the slide, and the store room roof. We will also reseal the cement floors in the classrooms, replace a classroom door, and fix the gate at main entrance. Most critically, we will replace the shade structure over the playground so it wont fall down on the kids! With climate smart repairs, the school will once again be a place where preschool children can play and learn in safety for years to come.
Over that last decade, Bahia Mar Hotel and other generous donors have transformed the community preschool into a beautiful center for early childhood development with infrastructure, staffing and supplies that have given hundreds of children a boost before they turn six and enroll in government primary school. The benefits of early childhood development are proven to last long into adulthood in areas such as education, health and income. It's one of the greatest tools for ending poverty.
