Summary

This project works with partners across the country to bolster garden programs for communities in need. From school and community gardens to urban gardens and rural ones - we help strengthen food security while connecting people to their community and to their food, from soil to table. By providing quality seed of adapted vegetable varieties and the knowledge needed to successfully grow, use, and even market vegetables, we build food resilience across the USA.

Challenge

In the US, 10.5% of households are food insecure. That is 13.8 million Americans who don't have access to enough food on a regular basis. To compound this problem, roughly 39.5 million people - 12.8% of the US population - live in food deserts, or areas with limited access to fresh food. As environmental and market fluctuations become more unpredictable, local and affordable food sources can be important in developing resiliency to these stressors.

Solution

SPI is uniquely positioned to address this problem. We work with our network of partners to receive large quantities of high-quality vegetable seed and then place this vegetable seed with organizations running garden programs throughout the US. Combining this with training and tools, allows us to support community and school gardens as they improve food security across the country.

Long-Term Impact

Growing your own fruits and vegetables supports a healthy and affordable diet. Stewarding community and school gardens not only provides healthy food, but increases long-term food security and sovereignty. Participating in community and school gardens helps foster a sense of belonging, empowerment, and community, which has shown to increase feelings of wellbeing. These gardens have the opportunity to increase community resilience and wellbeing through a holistic lens.
