Urgent Action Against New COVID Variants

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We are seeking support for the Preparing Nigerians for New COVID-19 Variants project. At this time, no donations have been received. Since no funding has been raised, we are not yet able to kick-start the project activities in the communities that need them most.

New sub-variants of COVID-19 are circulating globally, and Nigeria must remain alert. Many rural and low-income urban communities still lack updated health information, testing access, and protective materials. When outbreaks surge, these gaps increase the risk for elderly persons, those living with chronic illness, and unvaccinated individuals. Without preparation, infection rates can rise quickly and place pressure on local health facilities.

This project will train community health volunteers to identify symptoms linked to new variants, report suspected cases early, and guide families on appropriate next steps. We plan to distribute masks, hand sanitiser, and testing kits in selected high-risk communities. Educational campaigns delivered in local languages will explain new symptoms, rapid antigen and PCR testing options, and when to seek medical care.

Early detection and clear communication can prevent small clusters from spreading widely. When communities understand warning signs and have access to protective supplies, they are better positioned to respond swiftly and reduce household transmission.

Until funding is secured, these planned activities cannot begin. We respectfully ask for your support so that we can start training health teams, procure essential supplies, and roll out awareness efforts without delay.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
Project Leader
