Our Centre opened for the new school year on January 14. We welcomed back 52 returning students and enrolled 67 new children. This is twice the number of students we had when we first opened! We now have 28 children in our Grade R (kindergarten) class, with 48 and 43 children in our two younger classrooms.
For our Grade R class, we follow the curriculum guidelines provided by the Department of Education, focused on language, mathematics, and life skills. The curriculum provides clear learning objectives for each term, designed to build foundational skills, and emphasizes play-based learning and preparation for grade school. The lessons and our classroom activities revolve around a different theme each week. The guidelines also advise us on how to assess the students’ progress. For our younger classes, we use the South African National Curriculum Framework to plan our curriculum. It promotes holistic development through play-based, flexible learning. Our goal is to ensure we provide a high-quality, inclusive experience for our children, focusing on care, education, and development. The curriculum covers six key learning and development areas: well-being, identity and belonging, communication, exploring mathematics, creativity, and understanding the world.
In addition to the planned curriculum, we also include fun free time in our week, special celebrations for holidays and other events, and occasional field trips. Last month we celebrated Valentine’s Day. The kids wore red and pink to school, made beautiful cards for their families, and had ice cream, a rare treat for our children. The kids had an amazing time and really enjoyed the special snack
As always, your support is essential to continuing our programs at Siyabonga. And if you give this week, your donation can have an even bigger impact! For their “Little by Little” campaign, GlobalGiving will match all donations of up to $50 at 50% from now through Friday, March 20 (or until funds run out, so please give now!). Your generosity this week can help ensure we have the funds we need to continue our program for the rest of the school year.
I can’t thank you enough for everything you have done for Siyabonga over the years. We would not be able to provide the services we do without your support. Your commitment to the children and families in our area has truly helped to uplift and enrich their lives.
With deep gratitude and best wishes,
Khethiwe
