The municipal government of Piendamo has acquired land for natural reserves because of its great importance as a water source for rural aqueducts. 81 hectares have been acquired, benefiting approximately 55,000 people, the majority of which have deteriorated due to human activities and inadequate production practices. The project will implement the following intervention actions: environmental restoration, inventory of native flora and participatory science, to improve environmental services.
81 hectares have been acquired to preserve nature and 70% are deteriorated, which ends up affecting the loss of some ecosystem services such as the reduction of water, which is the resource most felt by the community since it affects both its agricultural activities and human consumption. Another problem is the loss of native species and some are threatened, affecting the health of natural ecosystems.
An inventory of the flora where there is forest cover will be made, the purpose is to generate knowledge of native species for future conservation work, especially endangered species. Different ecological restoration techniques will be applied to the deteriorated area, such as planting trees, transposing soil, and building artificial shelters and perches. A "Flora With Science" program will be implemented in the schools that live near the nature reserve.
It seeks to promote water security and biodiversity, the first is the beginning of improving sustainable access to water demand in the community aqueducts which benefit 2500 people and preserve biodiversity because according to national data in the last 50 years in Colombia 1500 species have been identified as endangered species (IUCN) in the work area are declared the oak (Quercus Humboldtii) and deer (Mazama rufina).
