Summary

As the leatherback turtles (Dermochelys Coriacea) travel, every 2-3 years, thousands of miles to reach Lababia village, one of their nesting sites, to lay their eggs, October is their nesting season. The initiative brought by Lababia indigenous communities - over 20 communities - and MDF to protect the currently endangered species of marine turtles. The fundraising is aiming to equip our communities' volunteers with the necessary means to sustain the numbers of the beautiful leatherback turtles.

Challenge

Despite this species persisting for over 100 million years, the pacific population of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) has dramatically declined in the last 25 years which has been linked to fisheries, meat harvesting and in more recent years' climate variability. Lababia village is one of few nesting sites for the leatherback turtles. The initiative through volunteers is to protect and to preserve the newly hatched turtles from threats of climate change challenges, animals' devouring.

Solution

Our volunteers are to be involved in three-action plan; Raising Awareness; to minimize commercial fisheries, Action on Climate Change; Challenges of rising sea level and sand temperature changes - elaborated by planting mangroves, building hatchery - and Protection of newly hatched turtles - from animal devouring them - mainly dogs. Solutions Equipping our trained volunteers with the necessary tools to aid them accomplishing their mission in preserving the newly hatched Turtles back to the sea.

Long-Term Impact

Preserving These thousands years' survival species from extinction and a step in our way to preserving the eco-system balance. Together We Can Make a Difference!
