Kono Gnaga Update November 2023

By Solo Sana | Director

Dear Kono Gnaga friends and family,

We are happy to report that llast week we launched our annual school program in  Bamako!  All of the local artists were gathered together and assigned to our 6 partner schools we will be working with. We are excited to report that newthis year we are working with an all girls school and have found a female dancer to teach these children.  Classes in the 6 different schools and neighborhoods will take place over the next 3 months, with the annual Community festival happening in January 2024.  We are excited to see what the students will learn and perform this year!

Plans are in place to launch a program in the Segou region of Mali.  More information will follow as we prepare for Giving Tuesday, as this will be the basis of our campaign this year- expanding to the rural areas of Mali!

In other news,Kono Gnaga partnered with Artists to End Genocide (ATEG) and carried out weekly dance program at the Faladie IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) Camp in Bamako.  We were thrilled at the opportunity to work with this vulnerable yet vibrant population of children in order to work with them to teach them their own ethnic dances and reinforce their important cultural heritage.   Every week the drummers would come to the camp and start playing and the children would run towards the drums from all directions, excited to participate.  After a few months we identified that the children and their families could benefit from reinforcement of hygiene practices, especially given the location where they live, on a garbage site.  We therefore held a Hygiene Event over the course of two days where a local doctor gave instructions on dental care and washing hands with soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste distributed to over 100 children.  The event was well received as the presence of the local artists well known to the community increased the large attendance and enthusiasm.

Please take a look at our annual report to read more about our programs this year:  KG 2023 Newsletter

Without your support all of this work could not continue so we are eternally grateful!!   We look forward to a new successful Giving Tuesday campaign at the end of this month!

Thank you,

Solo Sana

and the Kono Gnaga Board of Directors
