Period Poverty is defined as a lack of access to menstrual health products, education, hygiene facilities, waste management, or any combination of these. Girls living in poverty are likely to lack these basic needs, be negatively impacted in school and have little hope of rising up from poverty.
Many girls in Kenya miss school when they have their periods because of Period Poverty. Poor attendance often leads to dropping out, teen pregnancies, early marriages and a continuation of living in poverty. Providing education, menstrual health products and bathrooms with water can help girls stay in school, graduate and lead better lives.
Grow Against Poverty will build bathrooms at four all-girls schools. These will improve daily hygiene and also provide clean, private areas for girls when they have their periods. Menstrual health products and education will be provided to all students.
Girls will miss fewer days of school. Gains will be seen in academic achievement, graduation rates and acceptances to university. There will be more opportunities for good employment with living wages to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Fewer girls will become pregnant at a young age and there will be less pressure for teenage marriage.
