Stop Period Poverty for Girls in Morocco

As we approach the occasion of World Toilet Day, it is essential to remind ourselves of how essential it is to have access to clean and safe sanitary facilities during menstruation. Many vulnerable Moroccan women and girls face menstrual insecurity, affecting their health and their education as well, since many teen girls stay home from school when menstruating as they lack the means to effectively manage their periods.

Menstrual Insecurity is a common obstacle faced by teen girls in Morocco, as it impedes gender equality, health and education. Inadequate WASH facilities at schools, a lack of understanding of menstruation and how to appropriately manage their periods, cultural stigmas associated with menstruation, and a lack of accessibility to menstrual products for teen girls living beneath the poverty line all combine to push marginalized teen girls into menstrual insecurity.

Improving menstrual health for Moroccan teen girls is an investment in Moroccan society and the economy at large because when girls lose, everyone loses. 

Safe and private bathrooms should be accessible to everyone, especially during their periods, but since this is not yet the case, at Project Soar we try to help teen girls grappling with menstruation by providing them with reusable, eco-friendly menstrual underwear that can be changed up to every eight hours and allow them to attend an entire day of school! #JustSanitation4AfricanCities
