Summary

BKHC is securing Belize's forests by sustaining a frontline Fire Brigade for Tapir Mountain and Thousand Foot Falls. This project supports our community fire brigade with refresher training while recruiting new members to expand our reach. We will maintain critical response gear-including water bags, blowers, and water pumps-and service our patrol motorcycle for remote access. By investing in team retention and equipment readiness, we prevent wildfires from destroying vital wildlife habitats.

Challenge

In Belize's Cayo District, the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve (TMNR) and Thousand Foot Falls Natural Monument (TFFNM) face growing threats from wildfires exacerbated by record-breaking dry seasons. These fires, often started by agricultural clearing, destroy thousands of acres of critical habitat annually. Currently, our response relies on a dedicated community fire brigade. However, without regular refresher training and funds to service aging equipment, our team's readiness is at risk.

Solution

This project sustains our frontline defense by funding refresher training for our existing community fire brigade and recruiting new members. We will professionally service our essential fleet-including the response motorcycle, chainsaws, and water pumps-ensuring zero equipment failure during emergencies. By clearing critical firebreaks and launching a "Fire awareness" program, we combine physical prevention with community education to stop fires before they spread, securing the forest's future.

Long-Term Impact

This project transforms a reactive firefighting group into a permanent, self-sustaining community institution. By keeping the brigade engaged and equipment operational year-round, we ensure the TFFNM and Tapir Mountain watersheds remain intact, protecting the region's water supply and biodiversity for decades. This model of community-led stewardship serves as a blueprint for other Belizean protected areas, proving that local expertise is the most effective tool against climate-driven wildfires.
