Support for Kidney Disease Patients in Pakistan.

Fatima Memorial Hospital has been providing healthcare services to over 10.04 million patients from all walks of life since 1977 Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department acknowledges the increasing prevalence of renal diseases worldwide and actively works towards alleviating the burdensome impact of these conditions.

Fatima Memorial Hospital is providing the following services about Kidney Diseases:

• 2 outpatient clinics per week catering to more than 500 patients monthly at a very nominal fee ( PKR 200 or 0.75 USD) under the supervision of trained nephrologists
• 24-hour in-patient services to the admitted patients
• 24-hour emergency services to more than 900 patients per month visiting the emergency room with kidney problems
• Procedures including kidney biopsies, temporary and permanent hemodialysis catheter insertion, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion,
• The majority of the procedures are done free of cost, and a well-equipped hemodialysis unit provides services including emergency dialysis initiation to the admitted and walk-in patients.
• The hemodialysis unit caters to around 40 permanently enrolled patients undergoing twice or thrice weekly hemodialysis.
• More than 4500 hemodialysis sessions were done in the last year out of which more than 2000 hemodialysis sessions were done free of cost and the rest were provided at cost only.
• The unit is equipped with 11 hemodialysis machines (including 5 machines for patients suffering from hepatitis C, 5 machines for non-hepatitis patients, and 1 for hepatitis B-positive patients).
•  7 of our machines on average have more than 50,000 running hours which is far more than their average working life of 10-20,000 hours.

For the past 14 years, Rizwan has been receiving treatment from the Nephrology department at Fatima Memorial Hospital. As the sole breadwinner for a family of five, his health condition holds great significance. Thankfully, Fatima Memorial Hospital has been providing full support for his treatment. Rizwan has faced the challenges of kidney failure, which led to him being placed on a ventilator not once, but twice. However, the unwavering dedication of the Nephrology Department at Fatima Memorial Hospital proved to be instrumental in miraculously saving his life on both occasions.

Rizwan represents just one of the numerous cases receiving care at Fatima Memorial Hospital. Our goal is to continuously expand our service capabilities in order to meet the growing demands with your valuable support, which we hope will remain steadfast. Given the worldwide burden of disease and the escalating number of kidney patients globally, including in Pakistan, the existing resources fall short of adequately addressing the increasing patient influx each day. In the past year, Fatima Memorial Hospital has provided assistance to over 10,000 patients through our Nephrology department.

Our hemodialysis unit, like many others, is operating at maximum capacity, leaving a significant number of patients unable to secure a permanent spot for hemodialysis due to limited availability. Unfortunately, these patients often face dire consequences, either succumbing to their condition or continuously moving from one emergency to another in search of dialysis sessions.
 

To address this pressing issue and aid patients in need, Fatima Memorial Hospital has taken the initiative to establish a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program. At the Peritoneal Dialysis unit in Fatima Memorial Hospital, we have a team of trained doctors, peritoneal dialysis nurses, and technicians who oversee the program and help the patients overcome the long waiting lines. They actively engage in providing comprehensive training and conducting workshops for nurses and doctors from all across Pakistan, empowering them with the knowledge and skills required to administer peritoneal dialysis effectively.

Thanks to the generous support we have received, we have been able to save lives and provide home-based peritoneal dialysis to those in need. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are also collaborating to acquire an automated peritoneal dialysis machine specifically designed for nighttime dialysis, further enhancing the accessibility and convenience of this treatment option.

 By expanding our dialysis services beyond the traditional hemodialysis approach, we are determined to alleviate the burden on patients awaiting treatment and offer them a viable and sustainable solution through our Peritoneal Dialysis program.

The Nephrology Department at Fatima Memorial Hospital realizes the global rise in diseases pertaining to renal function and has been contributing in order to share the crippling burden of said disease.

 Syed Kashif Ali was brought to Fatima Memorial Hospital 15 years back when he faced kidney failure. As he was undergoing Dialysis Treatment, he also suffered a life-threatening Brain Hemorrhage which compelled for him to be put on a ventilator in Fatima Memorial Hospital's High Dependency Unit (HDU). He recovered miraculously within two weeks. Kashif now receives regular dialysis treatment at the hospital. Not only that, he was also enabled to earn a livelihood for his family by the hospital management as he works as Front Desk Officer. This was made possible by the donations of people from around the globe. 

Kashif is one of many such cases that are being provided care at Fatima Memorial Hospital and we aim to expand the service capacities in the future to come with your support which we hope will continue indefinitely.

Considering the global burden of disease and an increase in the number of kidney patients all over the world as well as in Pakistan, the available resources are not enough to meet the needs of an increasing number of patients day by day. Fatima Memorial Hospital has catered to more than 10,000 patients in the last year under our Nephrology Department. 

Most of the hemodialysis units including ours are working to their maximum capacity and still a long list of patients is there that are not able to find a permanent hemodialysis center due to the non-availability of slots. Most such patients unfortunately die or go from emergency to emergency in search of hemodialysis sessions.

• To overcome this problem, and to help the patients in need, we at Fatima Memorial Hospital initiated a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program which is giving patients the liberty to use an alternate mode of dialysis and to overcome long waiting lists for hemodialysis.
• The peritoneal Dialysis unit at Fatima Memorial Hospital is being supervised by Trained Doctors and trained peritoneal dialysis nurses and technicians who are actively involved in giving training/workshops to nurses and doctors from all over Pakistan.
• With the help of support, we have been able to save lives and provide home-based peritoneal dialysis.
• We are collaborating to provide an automated peritoneal dialysis machine also for nighttime dialysis.
