Kidney Disease in Pakistan

By Dr Anam Waseem | Senior Associate Communications

Fatima Memorial Hospital, established in 1977, has been a beacon of hope for healthcare in Pakistan, serving over 10.04 million patients from diverse backgrounds. The hospital's Nephrology Department acknowledges the global surge in renal diseases and strives to mitigate their impact. This report sheds light on kidney disease statistics both worldwide and in Pakistan and outlines the services provided by Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department to combat this growing health challenge.

Kidney Disease in Pakistan: In Pakistan, kidney disease is a growing issue, and Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department has been actively addressing this concern. Some statistics related to kidney disease in Pakistan include:

  1. Prevalence: Pakistan has a high prevalence of kidney disease, with an estimated 20-25 million individuals affected by various renal disorders.

  2. Access to Care: Limited access to affordable healthcare services exacerbates the kidney disease burden, especially in low-income populations.

  3. Dialysis Services: The demand for dialysis services in Pakistan exceeds the available resources, leading to a significant gap in access to life-saving treatments.

Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department Services: Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department is committed to addressing the growing challenges posed by kidney diseases. The department offers a range of services, including:

  1. Outpatient Clinics: Conducting 2 outpatient clinics weekly, providing care to over 500 patients monthly at a nominal fee of PKR 200 or $0.75 under the supervision of trained nephrologists.

  2. In-Patient Services: Offering 24-hour in-patient care to admitted patients and 24-hour emergency services to more than 900 patients monthly with kidney problems.

  3. Procedures: Performing various procedures such as kidney biopsies, temporary and permanent hemodialysis catheter insertions, and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions.

  4. Hemodialysis Unit: Operating a well-equipped hemodialysis unit that caters to approximately 40 permanently enrolled patients undergoing dialysis.

  5. Affordability: Providing most procedures and services free of cost or at a nominal fee to ensure accessibility.

Challenges and Initiatives: Despite these efforts, the Nephrology Department faces challenges due to the overwhelming demand for dialysis services. To address this issue, Fatima Memorial Hospital has initiated a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program. This program aims to:

  1. Reduce Waiting Times: Alleviate the burden of patients waiting for hemodialysis by offering an alternative and accessible dialysis method.

  2. Education and Training: Conduct workshops and training sessions for healthcare professionals across Pakistan to enhance their peritoneal dialysis knowledge and skills.

  3. Technology Advancements: Collaborate to acquire automated peritoneal dialysis machines, making nighttime dialysis more convenient and accessible.

Donation Needed For:

  • Single Hemodialysis session & Medicines: $40 (one month: $350)
  • Temporary Hemodialysis Catheter Insertion: $40
  • Permanent Hemodialysis Catheter & Insertion: $200
  • Kidney Biopsy Including Histopathology: $70
  • Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter & Insertion: $700
  • Peritoneal dialysis per month: $350
  • Hemodialysis Machine: $10,000

Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department is dedicated to combating kidney disease and its associated challenges.
