Addressing Kidney Disease in Pakistan

By Fatima Memorial Hospital | Not for Profit

Introduction:
Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department continues its unwavering commitment to combating the rising prevalence of kidney diseases in Pakistan. As per our previous report, kidney diseases pose a significant health challenge, affecting millions across the nation. In this update, we highlight our ongoing efforts, challenges faced, and the progress made towards our goals.

Current Status:

Prevalence: Pakistan remains burdened by a high prevalence of kidney diseases, impacting an estimated 20-25 million individuals.
Access to Care: Limited access to affordable healthcare services exacerbates the kidney disease burden, particularly among low-income populations.
Dialysis Services: The demand for dialysis services continues to surpass available resources, resulting in prolonged waiting times and compromised access to life-saving treatments.
Ongoing Initiatives:

Outpatient Clinics: Our Nephrology Department conducts two outpatient clinics weekly, providing care to over 500 patients each month at a nominal fee.
In-Patient Services: We offer round-the-clock in-patient care and emergency services to more than 900 patients monthly, ensuring prompt treatment for kidney-related issues.
Procedures: Various procedures, including kidney biopsies, catheter insertions, and dialysis, are performed to address the diverse needs of patients.
Hemodialysis Unit: Our well-equipped hemodialysis unit caters to approximately 40 permanently enrolled patients, delivering vital dialysis services.
Affordability: To enhance accessibility, most procedures and services are provided free of cost or at a nominal fee.

Challenges and Solutions:
Despite our relentless efforts, challenges persist due to the overwhelming demand for dialysis services. To mitigate these challenges, we have initiated a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program, aimed at:

  • Reducing Waiting Times: By offering an alternative dialysis method, we aim to alleviate the burden on patients awaiting hemodialysis.
  • Education and Training: We conduct workshops and training sessions to enhance healthcare professionals' expertise in peritoneal dialysis, ensuring widespread adoption.
  • Technology Advancements: Collaboration efforts are underway to acquire automated peritoneal dialysis machines, enhancing convenience and accessibility for patients.
