A Race Against Time: Saving Kidney Patients

By Huzaifa Kermani | Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)

A Critical Update: The Need Is Rising — But Our Resources Are Not

Dear supporters,

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to rise at an alarming pace in Pakistan. With more than 17 million people affected nationwide, the burden on hospitals is overwhelming — and the most vulnerable patients suffer the most. At Fatima Memorial Hospital, our nephrology team provides round-the-clock life-saving care, but our capacity is reaching its breaking point.

As of today, $189,300 remains to meet our project goal of strengthening kidney care and expanding dialysis access for patients who depend on us to survive. Without urgent financial support, we risk watching patients deteriorate simply because we cannot provide them timely dialysis.

The reality is stark:
Kidney failure does not wait — neither can we.

Why We Need Urgent Support

1. Dialysis Demand Is Exploding

Every day, new patients arrive in emergency rooms with kidney failure, dehydration, or dangerously high potassium levels. Many have nowhere else to go — private centers are unaffordable, and most government units are already full.

2. Our Machines Are Reaching End-of-Life

Out of our 13 dialysis machines:

  • 7 machines have crossed 50,000+ hours of use, far beyond their safe operating lifespan.

  • Frequent breakdowns reduce available slots, forcing patients to wait — sometimes dangerously long.

3. Patients Are Dying While Searching for Dialysis Slots

Across Pakistan, thousands of patients go from hospital to hospital, unable to find a center that can take them. Many collapse before they reach help.
We refuse to let that happen within our walls — but we need more machines to keep that promise.

4. Peritoneal Dialysis Needs Scale-Up

Our home-based Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) program gives patients independence and frees them from waitlists — but PD machines and supplies are costly, and donor support is essential to keep this program available to the poorest families.

Program Impact So Far (April–June 2025) Outpatient Care

  • 2 clinics weekly, serving 500+ patients per month at a subsidized fee of PKR 200 (~USD 1.10).

Emergency Response

  • 900+ emergency nephrology patients attended monthly

  • Immediate stabilization & dialysis initiation for walk-ins

Dialysis Services

  • 100+ regular hemodialysis patients (2–3 sessions per week)

  • 9,000+ free dialysis sessions conducted in the last year

  • Dedicated units for Hepatitis B and C patients to ensure infection control

Procedures Offered Free or Subsidized

  • Kidney biopsies

  • Temporary and permanent catheter insertions

  • PD catheter placements

  • PD training for patients and caregivers

Equipment Snapshot

  • 13 total dialysis machines

  • Overworked machines creating risk for patient care continuity

  • Immediate need: 4 new dialysis machines (USD 40,000)

Voices from the Dialysis Unit

“My mother would not be alive without FMH. We had no money for private dialysis. This hospital gave her a second life.”
Patient’s son

“I come here three times a week. They treat me like family. But there are so many of us now — we desperately need more machines.”
54-year-old patient

These stories reflect thousands more unheard voices — people whose lives depend on a functioning dialysis system.

Where Your Support Goes $50

Funds one hemodialysis session + essential medicines

$3,000

Provides an automated Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) machine

$10,000

Funds a new hospital-grade dialysis machine — directly saving dozens of lives each year

Every contribution helps a patient breathe easier, walk again, regain strength, or simply stay alive.

Why This Project Matters

Kidney failure is relentless.
Patients cannot skip treatment.
Missing even one dialysis session can be fatal.

For Pakistan’s low-income families, survival is often determined not by the severity of the disease — but by whether they can access dialysis in time.

Your donation is not charity. It is life itself.

Looking Ahead: Our Immediate Priorities

  • Purchase 4 new dialysis machines to reduce critical wait times

  • Expand the Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) program to free clinic slots

  • Train nursing and technical staff on modern PD & HD protocols

  • Launch community-level CKD prevention workshops

  • Subsidize diagnostics for early detection of kidney disease

A Final, Urgent Appeal

This project is in a race against time.
With the rising number of kidney patients and our ageing machines nearing collapse, immediate donor support is the only way forward.

Please consider making a gift today — or sharing this project with someone who can help.
Every contribution saves a life.
Every session gives a patient another chance.

Thank you for standing with us — and for helping us continue saving lives every single day.
