A Life Threatening Disease!

By Aazer Durrani | Head of Marketing

A new study has projected some alarming figures, stating there are 22 million people in Pakistan with renal problems and out of these, some 22,000 develop End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) every year.

Quoting the figures in the report, senior nephrologists have expressed serious concerns regarding the manifold increase in the burden of kidney diseases every year in Pakistan, regretting the authorities were largely ignoring the critical issue.

At Fatima Memorial Hospital the Nephrology department is providing round the clock services to patients with kidney diseases from all walks of life.

The services being offered include:

  • 2 outpatient clinics per week catering more than 500 patients monthly at very nominal fee ( PKR 200 or 1.1 USD) under supervision of trained nephrologists
  • 24 hours in-patient services to the admitted patients
  • 24 hours emergency services to more than 900 patients per month visiting emergency room with kidney problems
  • Procedures including kidney biopsies, temporary and permanent hemodialysis catheter insertion, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion,
  • Majority of the procedures are done free of cost, and a well-equipped hemodialysis unit providing services including emergency dialysis initiation to the admitted and walk-in patients.
  • The hemodialysis unit caters around 40 permanently enrolled patients undergoing twice or thrice weekly hemodialysis.
  • More than 4500 hemodialysis sessions were done in last one year out of which more than 2000 hemodialysis sessions were done free of cost and rest were provided at cost only.
  • The unit is equipped with 11 hemodialysis machines (including 5 machines for patients suffering from hepatitis C, 5 machines for non-hepatitis patients and 1 for hepatitis B positive patient).
  •  7 of our machines on an average have more than 50000 running hours which is far more than their average working life of 10-20,000 hours.

28-year-old patient, the sole bread winner of his family, was brought to Fatima Memorial Hospital with high blood pressure followed by cardiac arrest. Suffering from hypertension since the age of 18, this patient made a miraculous recovery after being on the ventilator for over two weeks, due to the timely treatment he received in the Intensive Care Unit at Fatima Memorial Hospital. It was during his stay at the hospital that he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease and is now regularly receiving life-saving dialysis treatment. Your donations have helped us to provide PKR 4.5 million worth of treatment, free of cost to the patient, without which his life journey may have ended prematurely at a very young age leaving his family orphaned.

There are numerous cases like Saleem who have been provided lifesaving treatment through your donations . We hope you choose to continue the cycle of giving by providing support to our cause.

Considering the global burden of disease and an increase in number of kidney patients all over the world as well as in Pakistan, the available resources are not enough to meet the needs of increasing number of patients day by day.

Most of the hemodialysis units including ours are working to their maximum capacity and still a long list of patients is there that are not able to find a permanent hemodialysis center due to non-availability of slots. Most of such patients unfortunately die or go from emergency to emergency in search of hemodialysis session.

  • To overcome this problem, and to help the patients in need, we at Fatima Memorial Hospital initiated a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program which is giving patients liberty to use an alternate mode of dialysis and to overcome long waiting lists for hemodialysis.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis unit at Fatima Memorial Hospital is being supervised by Trained Doctors and trained peritoneal dialysis nurses and technicians who are actively involved in giving training/workshop to nurses and doctors from all over Pakistan.
  • With the help of support, we have been able to save lives and provide home based peritoneal dialysis.
  • We are collaborating to provide automated peritoneal dialysis machine also for night time dialysis.
