Chronic Kidney Disease on the rise

By Saman Tariq | Project Manager

Recent data from the study of Global Burden of Disease has revealed that kidney disease is associated with mortality with an increase of almost 32.3% and 10th most common cause of death and disability combined.

Data from local registries and publications from Pakistan suggest that 12.5-29.9% of the adult population is suffering from kidney disease and a rough estimate suggests that more than 20,000 patients will need dialysis at any time.  These numbers are increasing with the increasing trends of diabetes, hypertension, pollution etc. causing kidney disease.

We at Fatima Memorial Hospital, Nephrology department are aware of these facts and keep on assessing the requirements of our kidney disease patients. We have kept ourselves abreast with the latest developments and providing round the clock services to patients with kidney diseases from all walks of life.

The services being offered include:

  • 2 outpatient clinics per week catering more than 500 patients monthly at very nominal fee

(PKR 200 or 1.1 USD) under supervision of trained nephrologists

  • 24 hours in-patient services to the admitted patients
  • 24 hours emergency services to more than 900 patients per month visiting emergency room
  • Procedures including kidney biopsies, temporary and permanent hemodialysis catheter insertion, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion,
  • Majority of the procedures are done free of cost, and a well-equipped hemodialysis unit providing services including emergency dialysis initiation to the admitted and walk-in patients.
  • The hemodialysis unit caters around 60 permanently enrolled patients undergoing twice or thrice weekly hemodialysis.
  • More than 4500 hemodialysis sessions were done in last one year out of which more than 2000 hemodialysis sessions were done free of cost and rest were provided at cost only.
  • The unit is equipped with 12 hemodialysis machines (including 5 machines for patients suffering from hepatitis C, 6 machines for non-hepatitis patients and 1 for hepatitis B positive patient).
  •  7 of our machines on an average have more than 50000 running hours which is far more than their average working life of 10-20,000 hours.

Most of the hemodialysis units including ours are working to their maximum capacity of four shifts per day. Many other patients die due to late diagnosis with lack of resources to seek medical advice or from emergency to emergency in search of hemodialysis session.

  • To overcome this problem, and to help the patients in need, we at Fatima Memorial Hospital initiated a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program which is giving patients liberty to use an alternate mode of dialysis and to overcome long waiting lists for hemodialysis.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis unit at Fatima Memorial Hospital is being supervised by Trained Doctors and trained peritoneal dialysis nurses and technicians who are actively involved in giving training/workshop to nurses and doctors from all over Pakistan.
  • With the help of support, we have been able to save lives and provide home based peritoneal dialysis.
  • We are collaborating to provide automated peritoneal dialysis machine also for night time dialysis.

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL

I am Muhammad Rizwan. I am suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease and on maintenance hemodialysis from the last fourteen years at Fatima Memorial Hospital on regular basis. All the doctors, nurses and social welfare people have been very kind and supportive during these years. I am getting free dialysis for the last 14 years even through the times of financial and pandemic stresses like COVID-19.  Fatima Memorial Hospital has never left me unattended and have managed to support me.  Due to their attention, quality treatment and hard work, I am enjoying and living my life like a normal person. I am able to work and support myself and my family. It would have been impossible without the support I have received and request you all to please support us and give us the hope to live life like you. Your generous support will help us replace our machines that have already been used for exceptionally long time.  Your support can also help in buying medications or cover the costs of the dialysis therapy and continue the good work that Fatima Memorial hospital is doing. There are many people like me who need your support as they are left to die due to lack of resources and equipment.
