In Liberia, teen rights have been undermined due to cultural and traditional prevalence. Teens are made to believe especially in the remote areas of the country that they are meant to be at the service of men in the name of marriage, and unplanned childbearing. Their physical, emotional, and social development are also horrible and some suffer death during childbirth. We provide sex education, promote gender equality, and emphasize the importance of delaying marriage and childbirth in Liberia.
Teenage pregnancy and child marriage remain significant challenges in Liberia. The country has one of the world's highest rates of teenage pregnancy, with 38% of girls becoming pregnant and 36% of girls getting married before they turn 18 according to UNFPA and Girl Not Brides. These issues can lead to adverse consequences for young girls' health, education, and economic prospects. The project aims to create awareness about the prevention of teenage pregnancy and child marriage in Liberia.
The project will minimize teenage pregnancy, early marriage, and gender disparity through education and awareness in schools and communities. Girls and boys will receive education on the importance of delaying sexual activity until they are mature enough to make responsible decisions and their right to education. This project will raise awareness among parents, teachers, community & traditional leaders, and district government officials to prevent teenage pregnancy and child marriage.
By increasing access to education, particularly for girls and promoting awareness of the negative consequences of early marriage and pregnancy, girls will be able to make informed decisions about their futures; increased numbers of girls with improved knowledge on their right to education and sexual reproductive health services. These efforts will lead to positive long-term impacts on the lives of girls, including increased economic opportunities, improved health outcomes, and reduced poverty.
