  • Summary

Considering the high rate of teenage pregnancy and child marriage in Liberia, we are thrilled to share the successful outcome of a one-day awareness campaign conducted by Youth Dream for Constructive Achievement (YDCA) in Liberia, focused on preventing Teenage Pregnancy and Child Marriage. YDCA is a nonprofit that provide support to less-fortunate children, at-risk youths, marginalized women and others vulnerable groups in Liberia.

  • Our Approach to Raising Awareness:h

Te awareness campaign adopted a multi-stakeholder approach to effectively address teenage pregnancy and child marriage in the two communities namely, the Vonzon and Banjor communities in Brewerville, Montserrado County. The awareness campaign cover the following;

  • Stakeholder Collaboration:

YDCA engaged stakeholders from the Ministry of Gender, Social and Children Protection, Liberia NGOs Network (LINNK), and the Media. These stakeholders representation was crucial in delivering comprehensive and targeted information to the communities.

  • Community Engagement:

Doing the town hall meetings, we witnessed a remarkable level of community engagement and collective action. Together, community leaders, parents, and concerned individuals vowed to take action to prevent teenage pregnancies and child marriages.  The interactive town hall meetings allowed for open conversations with parents, community leaders, and adolescents, creating a safe space to discuss prevailing issues and challenges. The campaign focused on educating adolescents, parents, and community members on the importance of empowering young girls and the long-term benefits of education.

  • Expert Presentations:

The success of these town hall meetings can largely be attributed to the inclusion of expert presentation. We invited specialists in the field of adolescent’s health and child protection, who effectively conveyed the long-term effects of teenage pregnancy and child marriage on individuals, families, and the community as a whole. Their insights and data-driven approach helped community members grasp the seriousness of these issues, leading to a stronger sense of urgency for mitigating their impact.

One of these experts represented the Ministry of Gender, Social and Children Protection, who presented on the detrimental effects of early child marriage and effective mitigation strategies. The Ministry plays a vital role in addressing various social issues in Liberia, including early child marriage and teenage pregnancy. Their presentations highlighted how it hinders girls' education, limits their opportunities, and increases the risk of health complications.

The Liberia NGOs Network (LINNK) was represented by its National Chairman and presented on the effects of teenage pregnancy. LINNK presentation on the detrimental effects of teenage pregnancy highlighted the negative impact it has on the lives of young girls and the wider community and further emphasized the importance of sex education and reproductive health and right services.

 The Liberia NGOs Network (LINNK) is an umbrella organization that has over 300 membership. LINNK work to address various social issues, including teenage pregnancy and child marriage in Liberia.

  • Media Involvement:

YDCA invited representative from a media institution to disseminate our campaign messages to a wider audience to raise more public awareness. The media played a vital role in disseminating the campaign messages to the public and ensured extensive media coverage, extending the campaign's reach beyond the event attendees.

  • Impact of the awareness campaign

The awareness campaign had a significant positive impact on both communities and their members. Through these town hall meetings, we were able to engage community leaders, parents, and young individuals in open dialogues regarding the pressing issues of teenage pregnancy and child marriage. As a result of these discussions, community members gained a deeper understanding of the associated risks and consequences, leading to increased awareness and commitment to tackling these challenges. • Looking ahead

Building upon the campaign's momentum, our organization will take the next step to addressing the recommendations made by parents, adolescents and community leaders. Looking ahead, we envision establishing long-term mentorship and scholarship programs for vulnerable adolescents in Liberia. These initiatives will provide continuous support, guidance, and financial assistance to young girls, enabling them to overcome barriers and make informed life choices. By investing in the education and empowerment of young girls, we aim to create a brighter and more equitable future for Liberia.

As we move forward, we remain committed to sustaining the momentum generated by these town hall meetings. We will continue working closely with community leaders and parents to implement the mentorship and scholarship programs and monitor progress regularly. Our goal is to create a safer and healthier environment for young people, fostering their growth and development, while ensuring the eradication of teenage pregnancies and child marriages in Liberia.
