World Chimpanzee Day: A Safer Future for Chimps

By Alexandra Reddy and Jenny Botting | PASA Development Team

Thanks to your generosity, lives are being saved. This World Chimpanzee Day, we’re proud to share just a few of the ways your support is making a real difference for chimpanzees across Africa. Your donations are helping to rescue orphans from the illegal wildlife trade, provide round-the-clock care, and give traumatized chimpanzees the chance to heal and grow. Just this week, 2 baby chimps were seized from the illegal wildlife trade in Cameroon and brought to member Ape Action for safety and immediate care. They can heal from their trauma and wounds and find comfort and love again among their kind.

At PASA member sanctuaries, chimpanzees are getting second chances, and it’s all because you chose to act. In Guinea, at the Chimpanzee Conservation Center, a young chimp named Siaka is learning to trust again. Rescued after losing his family to poachers, Siaka arrived frightened and frail. But with expert veterinary care and a nurturing environment, he’s now growing stronger, more confident, and forming bonds with his new chimp family.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kailo was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and brought to Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center. There, he was cared for by a devoted human surrogate. Today, he’s healthy, thriving, and developing a calm, curious personality - with a particular love for beans.

These are just two of the thousands of lives that have been transformed across PASA’s network of wildlife centers - because of you.

The need remains urgent. Chimpanzees have already vanished from four African countries, and across the continent they face threats from habitat destruction, disease, and poaching. That’s why your continued support is essential.

On July 16, you’ll have a chance to make an even bigger impact.

Starting at 10:00 AM ET, donations between $100 and $1,000 will be matched during GlobalGiving’s Bonus Day. With $125,000 in matching funds available, your gift can go even further to help rescue chimpanzees, provide lifelong care, and protect the forests they call home.

Matching funds are limited and go quickly - donating early gives your gift the best chance of being matched.

Chimpanzees are intelligent, emotionally complex, and socially bonded beings who can live more than 60 years. They deserve a future of safety and care, and with your help, we can make that future possible.

This World Chimpanzee Day, we thank you for standing with PASA to protect Africa’s primates.
