Programme Sekoly: Karinoro Primary School

Earlier this month, SEED’s team carried out a preparatory field visit to Karinoro Primary School ahead of the upcoming construction phase. The main objectives of the visit were to evaluate the quality and availability of local construction materials such as sand, water, and rocks, and to assess logistical requirements, including transport, equipment, and storage options. This assessment ensures that SEED can plan effectively and carry out construction efficiently and safely. The site visit was a crucial step in confirming that the project is ready to move forward as scheduled, with construction expected to begin in November 2025. 

In addition to the technical assessment, SEED’s team met with key community members and local leadership, including the school’s Director, teachers, the Village Head, and the commune Mayor. The meeting served to strengthen collaboration and ensure shared understanding of the project goals and timelines. During this session, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was presented and discussed, clearly outlining the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders. Following these discussions, the team proceeded with the purchase of necessary materials to guarantee that construction can commence without delays. The project is expected to reach completion by May 2026, providing the Karinoro community with an improved educational facility that supports long-term learning outcomes.

SEED’s upcoming education infrastructure project aims to improve the quality of health and education at Karinoro Primary School in rural Madagascar. Starting in October 2025, a transformative nine-month project will begin to reshape the future of Karinoro Primary School students. Initial preparations will begin in October 2025, with full construction launching in November 2025 and final completion scheduled for June 2026.

The urgency of this work became even clearer following a recent visit by SEED’s Managing Director. During this trip, the gravity of the situation was undeniable: the school’s roof is broken, exposing children to danger during Madagascar’s increasingly severe cyclone season, most recently seen with Cyclone Jude, a deadly tropical cyclone that impacted Madagascar in March 2025. The latrines are in such disrepair that they are not only unusable but unsafe. This visit not only confirmed the need for intervention but also helped shape detailed plans to meet the school’s needs.

 As part of SEED's education infrastructure project, the existing school building will be carefully repaired, and a brand-new, fully furnished three-classroom block will be built. Students will, for the first time, have access to five gender-segregated ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines, complete with a menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facility to ensure dignity and inclusion for all. Clean water will become part of everyday life thanks to the installation of a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system, along with dedicated drinking and handwashing stations.

Teachers, too, will benefit. New on-site accommodation will help reduce absenteeism and build a stronger, more consistent learning environment for the students. The project will also include a comprehensive and sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education program. Delivered through a train-the-trainer model, this approach will empower both teachers and students with knowledge and long-term healthy behaviours. A school WASH committee will ensure these practices become a permanent part of school life.

SEED is also committed to environmental responsibility. The carbon footprint of the entire project will be offset through the creation of a community-managed tree planting site; a green legacy that supports both the environment and the local economy.
