This ten-month project aims to improve the quality of health and education at Volobe Sud Primary School in rural Madagascar. The project includes repairing the existing school building and constructing a new, fully furnished three-classroom school building with teacher accommodation. The two existing latrines will be repaired, and four additional gender-segregated latrines with menstrual hygiene management facilities will be built. SEED will also install a 10,000-litre rainwater tank.
Currently, there are only two classrooms for 292 students at Volobe Sud Primary School. Consequently, classrooms are overcrowded, and students can only attend half-day classes, with some students receiving as little as three hours of instruction per day. The lack of adequate WASH infrastructure further worsens the situation. Students share broken, non-gender-segregated latrines at a ratio of 146:1, which is well above the national ministry guideline ration of 50:1.
To address these issues, SEED will construct a new three-classroom building, repair existing facilities, and provide on-site teacher accommodation to reduce teacher absenteeism. SEED will also build four new gender-segregated latrines, repair the two existing ones, and install a dedicated menstrual hygiene management facility. A 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system will provide clean drinking water and support hygiene through handwashing stations.
This project will provide a safe and dignified learning environment, enabling students to attend full-day classes in sufficiently large classrooms. The project supports consistent school attendance, especially for girls, and reduces the spread of WASH-related diseases. Enhanced teacher presence, thanks to on-site accommodation and improved classroom conditions, will support better learning outcomes. So far $40,500 out of $121,892 has been secured. Thank you as you consider supporting Volobe Sud.
