In a region where coastal communities heavily depend on lobster fishing as a primary source of income, Project Oratsimba supports community-based, sustainable fisheries management in Sainte Luce and Elodrato.

Unfortunately, lobster stocks in the region have been declining, compounded by migration, climate change and unsustainable fishing practices, further exacerbating livelihood insecurity for vulnerable households.

The creation of Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA); protected marine zones managed by coastal communities, has proved an effective and sustainable method to protect marine biodiversity and support declining fisheries around the world.

Our Project Oratsimba team recently headed northwest to the city of Mahajunga for the 5th National Forum of the Réseau Mihari - Mihari Network. The event theme focused on Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) communities and resilience in the face of climate change.

The delegates presented SEED's work and Project Oratsimba to the 500 attendees and exchanged best practices in sustainable marine resource management and climate change adaption. In addition to this, they participated in the planting of 10,000 mangroves and were a voice for the 500,000 fisher members across the country.

Project Oratsimba also works to strengthen the financial resilience of fishing households. Recently three sessions on financial literacy have been completed. Through financial management training, SEED works with fishers and their partners to facilitate financial savings at the household level.

Through your support, we are fishing for sustainable futures together. Thank you for your continued donations.
