Summary

The Youth Leadership Program (YLP) will enable refugee youth living in Malaysia to become leaders in their community, through transformative peer to peer training. Using a human-centered design approach, YLP builds the soft skills of young refugees, boosting their capacities to identify and solve the challenges their communities face. YLP has been designed and will be implemented by the Project Stand Up team, who are refugee youth themselves and aim to inspire youth to become change agents.

Challenge

Refugees and other marginalised youth often have limited access to quality educational programs. This is often because of the high cost, the need to support their families, and in the case of refugees in Malaysia, the lack of a right to education. The lack of education opportunities and the misconception from society about their actual capacities leads to youth without the basic skills and confidence to solve their problems and make a difference.

Solution

The PSU team has created a Youth Leadership Program to train youth on soft skills and empower them to believe in their abilities. Through peer to peer trainings the refugee youth will learn skills such as teamwork, problem solving, communication and public speaking. At the end of the training program the participants will implement a capstone project to put into practice the skills they have learnt. They can choose their mini-project based on issues they've identified in their community.

Long-Term Impact

Youth will get to have a meaningful experience and explore options to find their passion through designing solutions to issues they feel passionate about. As a result, participating in YLP will empower the youth and break down the stereotypes and labels around refugees and marginalised youth.
