Project Report | Mar 14, 2019
Word Water Day

By Sunil Lalvani | Founder & CEO

Whoever you are, wherever you are, water is your human right. Access to clean, safe water is critical to sustainable development and a prosperous world. We cannot move forward as a global society while so many people are living without safe water. ‘Leaving no one behind’ is the theme for World Water Day 2019, which falls on March 22nd, and Project Maji will be marking the day in Ghana with new site openings, announcing new partnerships, and launching our new website! The team is currently working in Kenya to ensure that we too, leave no one behind; meeting with our partners and beneficiaries, working in the field to ensure we understand and meet the needs of the communities we serve.

 AIDF Africa Summit,

Project Maji was placed in the top 10 out of 130 applicants for ‘AID Africa Innovator of the Year Award’ at the AIDF Africa Summit, which engages all relevant aid and development stakeholders within Africa and beyond. The award recognises individuals and teams for their inspiring leadership, forward-thinking, creative problem solving and implementation of innovative programmes that have helped drive the African progress towards Sustainable Development Goals. The AIDF Africa Summit advocates for cross-sector approach through inclusive, effective collaboration and coordination between national and international NGOs, government and UN agencies, Red Cross, donors, investors, development banks and the private sector. John Otieno was in attendance to represent Project Maji.

Middlesex University - Dubai

Project Maji took part in the Middlesex University Institute of Sustainable Development Impactathon, where students solved real-world problems, and designed innovative solutions to the question ‘How can organisations solve global development challenges?’. Taking place on the margins of the 2019 World Government Summit in Dubai, teams of 4-5 postgraduate students had a mere 100 minutes to hack their solutions and then five minutes to pitch that solution to a panel of judges. The event aims to give participating social enterprises the opportunity to implement the students’ ideas and scale their impact.

Sevenoaks School, UK

Sevenoaks School UK has sponsored a new Project Maji solar-powered kiosk village of Ekoso, in Eastern Ghana, through an innovative fundraising campaign: Get in the water to help provide water! 40 students swam the equivalent distance to Ghana (3172.80 miles) to raise funds to replace a broken hand pump for this deserving community who are primarily Cocoa farmers. The students will visit the site for the inauguration in Ghana later this month, in partnership with the Ghanian charity Reading Spots, to learn about the critical link between education and safe water access in developing nations.

Cambridge University Judge Business School, UK

Our CEO and Founder Sunil Lalvani presented at Cambridge University Judge Business School, talking to students about his journey from businessman to social entrepreneur, as a message of encouragement for students to become active global citizens. As future world leaders and business moguls, students at top institutions such as Cambridge University are poised to become the next generation of change makers, whereby the choices they make in their professional lives will have the power to create real impact on the global development stage.

Arcadia School, Dubai

Furthering Project Maji’s community engagement in the UAE, Sunil also spoke at Arcadia Primary School, Dubai, as part of their entrepreneurial series; teaching children about water consumption practices and the issue of water poverty in developing nations. The children were so receptive to Project Maji’s message that they wrote thank you letters and designed fundraising ideas, which has resulted in the students hosting a fundraiser sale this week!

WASH Training

When Project Maji provides a solar-powered water kiosk to a rural village, we provide sustainable, clean water for years to come. However, our work doesn’t end there. On the contrary, our work has just begun! Sustainability is at the very heart of our values, and thereby we want to ensure that the communities we serve understand the importance of safe hygiene practices. That is why we work in the field with our local partners to deliver Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) training to our beneficiaries, and thereby prevent against water-borne illnesses. Project Maji recently provided a WASH training to communities in the Volta River region to educate and prevent against the parasitic disease of Schistosomiasis which is prevalent in the local river.

As always, we greatly appreciate your ongoing support and encouragement as we ramp up our activities for 2019. Thanks to you, we are well on our way to achieving our goal of sustainably serving 1 million people with clean water by 2025.  Stay tuned for some exciting announcements on World Water Day, March 22nd!
