Changing the Direction of Life

By Anna Schwaller | Project Assistant

Rudi's testimonial
Rudi's testimonial

Work has added much-needed content and meaning to Rudi's life. Rudi began his placement in January 2024 with the Criminal Sanctions Sector Experiential Expert Training project of Sininauhaliitto. After three months, this transitioned into a work trial as a peer counsellor.

The client work in Probation to Working Life involves organizing activities and coaching for prisoners on probation in Helsinki. It also includes excursions, visits, individual counselling, and various work-related activities. "The support and feedback from my colleagues, both in the project and at the Sininauhaliitto headquarters, has empowered me and restored my self-confidence, which has been eroded along the way. There is more to life now than wrestling with my own problems."

Rudi's own life centers around recovery. The decision to leave behind a life of substance abuse and crime was sealed a couple of years ago. "It was during my last pre-trial detention that I realized: No more. Now I have to change direction. The troublemaking is over."

His personal background is invaluable when working with released prisoners. "I can get straight to the point with people on probation. They are people whose challenges I know well. I also understand what can go wrong during the transition to civilian life, but I know from personal experience that change is possible."

Rudi often talks about the potential for change and the human capacity for transformation. In his case, the motivation to change was discovered, making him an example of how to find a new direction in life. What have the last few years taught you?

"It's just that simple arch that feels the best. The most important things in life are the time spent with those close to you. It has become clear that material does not bring happiness. Earning a living is enough. It's what you do that counts."

Thank you for supporting people like Rudi! Your support is indispensable!
