Celebration of Carers' Day

By Anna Schwaller | Project Assistant

Day of Carers, celebrated on 5 May 2024
Day of Carers, celebrated on 5 May 2024

The Day of Carers will take place on 5 May 2024. This day is primarily dedicated to honoring family members whose lives are affected by someone else’s addiction.

There is typically a profound sense of shame when a loved one is affected by addiction, often accompagnied by a necessity for secrecy. This is evident from the stories shared by these relatives. For instance, they hold fears regarding what others will think if it comes to light, higlighting the stigmatizing nature of addiction. Relatives frequently feel isolated in their pain, yet in reality, there are hundreds of thousands of family members of individuals grappling with addiction problems in Finland.

On Relatives' Day, particularly those facing challenging circumstances, are reminded: You are not alone! On Sunday 5 May, events will be held in Rauhanasema in Helsinki and Rytmikorjaamo in Seinäjoki, organized by local associations and the addiction clinic. Addiction support organizations will offer details on where to find support for family members. Additionally, relatives are encouraged to seek assistance from medical professionals, engage in peer support, and utilize telephone counseling services.

The theme for 2024 is thus "You are not alone". The aim is to guarantee that nobody feels isolated or alone in their situation but rather finds comfort and solidarity within a supportive community.

"I wish I had known from the start that there are thousands of people like me who have a loved one struggling with substance abuse. I wish someone had provided me with education about the stages of addiction and been honest with me", expresses one family member.

"It's incredible when someone understands half of what I'm talking about", shares another.

Let's commemorate Loved Ones Day by remembering and honoring all the loved ones who endure immense challenges and tirelessly strive for support!

Your donation in Finland and globally has made this work possible. Thank you!
