Summary

At the heart of the Universal Health strategy are Community Health Workers (CHWs), those trained to render certain basic health services to the communities they come from. In partnership with Tharaka Nithi Health Services, HopeCore is responsible for training, monitoring, and supervising CHWs, who conduct educational health service home visits and are digitally empowered with smartphones for data collection and training.

Challenge

Health is one of the most critical parts of life impacted by the lack of resources in Kenya. The community health strategy is an approach where households and communities strengthen their role in their health by increasing their knowledge, skills, and participation. And it is crucial to achieving health coverage in these communities that are far from formal healthcare facilities - thus combatting prevalent diseases like malaria, TB, and cholera, as well as promoting healthy nutrition and growth.

Solution

HopeCore's Community Health Workers (CHWs) are individuals who are trained to provide basic health care services and education to their local communities. They are often local residents who are familiar with the culture and customs of the community and can communicate effectively with community members. Roles include health education, referral service, health promotion, community mobilization, and monitoring and evaluation. They are a critical link between the health care system and communities.

Long-Term Impact

CHWs support maternal, newborn, and child health, promote immunizations, encourage health-seeking behavior, promote clean drinking water, hand hygiene, improved sanitation, and reduce the burden of disease in the community. The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund recognized CHWs as vital agents in achieving universal health coverage and other positive health outcomes on the African continent. HopeCore's efforts in Tharaka Nithi serve approximately 400,000 people.
