Child marriage remains a serious threat to girls' safety, education, and future. In many communities, faith leaders hold strong influence over social norms. This project brings Christian, Muslim, and traditional leaders together to speak with one voice against child marriage. Through training, dialogue sessions, and community outreach, we aim to shift harmful beliefs, support families to protect their daughters, and promote safe pathways for girls to stay in school.
In Nigeria, child marriage is often driven by long-held beliefs and pressure from families and religious or cultural expectations. Many parents think early marriage protects girls, even though it exposes them to abuse, health complications, and loss of education. Faith leaders are trusted voices in their communities, yet many lack accurate knowledge about the dangers of child marriage or how to guide families toward better choices.
This project uses interfaith dialogue as a tool to change community attitudes. We will: 1. Train faith leaders on child protection, girls' rights, and health risks linked to early marriage. 2. Organize interfaith dialogues where leaders publicly commit to ending child marriage. 3. Support leaders to conduct sermons, community talks, and home visits promoting girls' safety and education. 4.Engage parents and youth in discussions that encourage delaying marriage and supporting girls' schooling.
The project will help reduce the acceptance of child marriage and increase family support for girls' education. Faith leaders will become ongoing advocates, creating lasting cultural and social change. When girls stay in school, they gain the chance to be healthy, safe, and economically secure. The benefits extend to families and the wider community.
