This project seeks to provide for the physical, social, and mental well-being of the children and families in Amani's community. Amani provides medical care for all children at our center, including on-site first aid as well as emergency and chronic condition care coverage at the area's top medical facilities. We also have an on-site social worker, who provides counseling for children and their families. We provide art therapy, nature education, and sports programs to support emotional healing.
According to Unicef, over 75% of children and youth in Tanzania have been "slapped, punched, beaten or threatened with a weapon by a relative, [or other] authority figure." In the most severe cases, children are removed from family custody and brought into the government's social welfare system. These children have urgent medical, emotional, and psychological needs, which often go unmet. In order to thrive and heal, children need access to high-quality care in a safe, supportive environment.
Amani Children's Home works directly with the local social welfare officers to respond to abuse and provide safe housing for children in crisis. Amani's staff is specifically trained to address the needs of these children; this includes 1:1 counseling, social support, and ongoing parental education. Beyond this, we help children find healing through connecting with nature, expressing themselves through art, and building confidence through sports. Our multifaceted approach makes us unique.
Amani has the capacity to support ~50 children at a given time. Our work brings physical and physiological healing for these children and helps heal the broader community. Amani supports children in connecting with relatives and mentors outside the center. Furthermore, by including nature education in this approach, children gain a sense of appreciation and wonder for the wildlife around them. We seek to spark joy and curiosity through art, science, and sports to raise inspired youth leaders.
