Summary

This project will build a brick structure to house 3 Solar toilets, 3 urinals and 3 hand basins at Ncinci One's Montessori in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. The toilets are for the 80 young, rural Xhosa children who use our education facility on a daily basis. We have 30 young children attending Ncinci Ones Montessori in the morning and we have 50 children in Grades 1 - 3 attending the Siyafunda After School program. A safe toilet should be a right for a child, not a luxury!

Challenge

80 young, rural Xhosa children use our education facility daily and we currently only have 2 tin 'long drop' toilets. These 2 long drops are totally insufficient for the large number of children. Long drop toilets do not promote good health and hygiene, are NOT good for the environment and we need to address this problem urgently!

Solution

We will build a structure that will house 3 Solar toilets, 3 urinals and 3 hand basins. The children will be taught good basic hygiene around toilet use and hand washing, as well as the respectful use and conservation of water. Good hygiene leads to good health which increases school attendance.

Long-Term Impact

The children using our educational facility will learn good health and hygiene practices and will take these practices home and teach other family members. Children will become healthier due to better hygiene and this will increase increase their school attendance. The children will be taught the value of water and the GREAT need to conserve it! This information will be shared with parents and family members at workshops too.
