Two inpirating stories from Santander, Colombia!

By Catalina Alvarez | Project Manager

Onofre Zafra is a 28 years old boy from the state of Santader, Colombia. His accident took place in Matanza, Santander when he was 16 years old. Onofre was herding cattle when he heard an explosion and realized that he was the one who had activated it. He had stepped on a landmine that caused the amputation of his right leg.

Onofre received his first prosthesis with United for Colombia on December of 2006 and has received periodic maintenance from that date. On April he came to Bogotá and received a new high tech prosthesis.

Nowadays, Onofre is 28 years old and work as a nurse for a Home Health Agency in Bucaramanga, as he says: “I´m taking care of other people like I was helped after my accident”.

Another girl from Santander, Angie Paola Trespalacios (15), on 2008, at the time she only 9 years old, when she was coming back with her family from visiting her grandmother in the state of Bolívar, she stepped on a landmine. The explosion caused the amputation of Angie´s right leg and severe injuries on her cousin´s eyes.

Angie has been supported by United for Colombia since the time of the incident. She has received 8 different treatments according to her growing up needs.

Currently, Angie is in the ninth grade in Puerto Wilches where she lives with her father.
