Pakistan flooding - some stories to share with you

By Joe Samuel | Individual Giving Manager

In 2022, devastating and destructive flooding in Pakistan left 33 million people struggling to rebuild their lives. Our staff mobilized a rapid response at the time of the flooding to provide essential health, hygiene and food supplies.

To help local communities recover, you kindly donated to fund flood diversion walls and livelihood support.

Today, we'd like to share two stories:

Hope restored

Syed  from Dera Ismail Khan village, shares his story: "I had a grocery store with sweets and yogurt, enough to feed my 10 family members. However, the drainage channel erupted back in 2022 during floods, turning the whole village into a river. I barely rescued my family. I was unconscious due to the trauma. Everything, including my 4 goats and 2 cows, was swept away in the horrible floods we faced. The biggest loss was my shop.

"Now, with the help of Relief International, I can rebuild my shop and rebuild my livelihood. RI did not only provide cash assistance but also equipped me with skills to manage and grow my business effectively."

Mussarat's story

I started a small business of livestock at my mother’s home. I used to buy and sell livestock to earn a little bit for my mother and two infant twin daughters. The devastating floods snatched my livelihood when my three goats were swept away, and two died due to the rising water level in my courtyard”. Musarrat had made a modest income from selling their milk and other products.

With RI's support, Musarrat was able to purchase new livestock and rebuild her business. She worked tirelessly to care for her cattle and to sell their products in the local market. Now she can  provide for her daughters and mother through hard work and determination. She also saved some money to invest in her business and ensure a better future for her family.

It is only with the support of our community of donors that we can support communities to lift themselves up when disaster strikes. Thank you.
