Every year, thousands of Nigerian women fall into unsafe migration routes due to poverty and lack of information. Many face human trafficking, abuse, and health risks while seeking better lives abroad. This project will reach 1,800 women with training, awareness sessions, and small grants for safe income activities. The urgent need is now, as rising unemployment and cross-border trafficking networks put more women at immediate risk.
Unsafe migration from Nigeria is fueled by unemployment, poverty, and misinformation. Women are especially vulnerable, with many falling victim to traffickers who lure them with false promises of jobs or education abroad. Reports show that thousands of Nigerian women are trafficked to Europe each year, often subjected to exploitation. Without timely prevention, the cycle of unsafe migration will continue to expose more women to abuse and poverty.
The project will train 1,800 women in safe migration awareness, teach practical livelihood skills, and provide small grants to reduce economic pressure that pushes them toward unsafe migration. Women will attend sessions in their local communities, receive fact-based information about migration risks, and gain starter resources for trade or small businesses. This combination gives them safer alternatives and knowledge to avoid traffickers' traps.
With stronger awareness and stable livelihoods, women will be less likely to risk unsafe migration. Communities will benefit as knowledge spreads, creating safer choices for future generations. By helping women build income locally and resist traffickers' false promises, the project can reduce the flow of unsafe migration and contribute to more secure households. The model can later be adapted to protect larger groups across Nigeria.
