In a rural village in India, Rajesh experienced increasing financial difficulty, due to unirrigated land, meaning he was forced to migrate to sustain his family.
To complete his unfinished house, he took an advance of Rs 50,000 (£465) from a contractor, agreeing to work in a sugarcane field harvesting. However, the promised two-month contract turned into exploitation and abuse from the contractors. Despite completing their work, they were denied wages and subjected to further mistreatment.
Unable to return home and seeking help, Rajesh reached out to a helpline.
Upon receiving the distress call, the local team promptly intervened, initiating efforts to secure justice for Rajesh and his fellow labourers. Despite hurdles and delays, the team persisted in their advocacy until the District Magistrate intervened. Through collaborative efforts, including legal intervention and relentless follow-ups, Rajesh and others were safely returned to their village and received counselling afterwards.
Your support means we can keep on advocating the importance of safeguarding migrant worker's rights and ensuring justice for vulnerable communities.
Thank you
